Dry Powder Nasal Vaccine Platform
We have identified an opportunity to develop a novel platform technology to deliver dry powder nasal vaccines. The big advantage that powders enjoy over traditional vaccines is that they do not require refrigeration. This is a tremendous advantage in developing countries, where cold supply chain is difficult to maintain. We have a global license for a rotavirus vaccine that is formulated from non living virus like particles. Alaeras also has a proprietary method to manufacture the powder that has been shown to be stable as a vaccine for more than two years with no loss in potency. Finally, we have developed a novel, low cost delivery system that will consistently deliver the vaccine to the nasal cavity. This is a platform technology that may be used to produce vaccines for other diseases such as flu, HIV, TB, and possible biodefense applications.
Rotavirus kills nearly one million children every year, primarily in countries where clean water and sanitary conditions are less than satisfactory. This is a $2B market served by GSK and Merck. Both of the products these companies produce are liquid oral vaccines that must be refrigerated. The World Health Organization estimates that 140 million vaccines are needed each year and current manufacturers do not have enough capacity to meet this demand. We feel this is an excellent opportunity to help many people throughout the world, those that need help the most.
